Day 28 - Shipping containers

Shipping containers are everywhere you look in New Zealand, and not just at ports like Auckland, but in towns and cities re-purposed as pop up shops and bars.

Day 27 - Sails

Auckland is often nicknamed the 'city of sails' and while much of it feels oddly disconnected from the harbours that pinch it from both sides, the hundreds of moored ships down by Westhaven Marina create a clear impression of a population that loves to be out on the water.

Day 26 - Reminders of home

Who knew you could buy authentic London bus blinds from NZ's auction website Trade Me?

Day 25 - Gigs at Vector Arena

Portishead. Radiohead. Morrissey. The Smashing Pumpkins. New Order. The Stone Roses. These are just some of the iconic bands I've had the fortune of seeing at Auckland's Vector Arena over the past two years, proving there's a hungry audience here for the best of British and American alternative music.

Day 24 - Silo Park

One of Auckland's most recent renovations, Silo Park by the Wynward Quarter has transformed a bleak industrial landscape into a modern recreation space that comes alive at weekends with its projected movie showings and twilight market.

Day 23 - Churches

I grew up in a country where most churches were ancient and made of stone, but New Zealand places of worship, though all comparatively young, have a charm all of their own, especially when they're often the only public buildings of genuine architectural interest for miles around.

Day 22 - Cricket by the sea

I might be rubbish at it myself but the Kiwis love their cricket and don't need much excuse to crack out a bat, ball and set of plastic stumps. With views like this, why wouldn't you?

Day 21 - Summer weddings

Summer weddings in New Zealand are great. The three I've been to over here have all been blessed with perfect weather to compliment amazing views out across the ocean. And as the sun goes down, the party is just getting going.

Day 20 - The Sky Tower

It's not particularly noteworthy for its height or its design and yet Auckland's Sky Tower has always been of fascination to me for the way it rises straight up out of a nondescript block of the central city to define the silhouette of the skyline for miles around. Oh, and you can bungee off it, if you're that way inclined.

Day 19 - Federal Street

The Auckland CBD is definitely not a reason to love New Zealand but the recently opened strip of bars and top class eateries on Federal Street by Sky City at least provides a reason to venture down there every now and again...

Day 18 - Houses with swimming pools

Ok, I can't exactly claim this is something I love about living here but tonight I certainly felt pretty privileged to be sitting having dinner outside in a friend's garden with this fantastic pool and garden as my view.

Day 17 - The Cornwall Park obelisk

There are many things to love about Cornwall Park, from the abundant lambs in springtime to the shaded walkway of Twin Oak Drive, but for me it's the man-made obelisk that stands proud at the summit of One Tree Hill that really makes this place unique.

Day 16 - When England beats NZ

There's something quite special about being a travelling fan of an away side when they win a match thousands of miles from home, so the England cricket team's recent success against New Zealand on Kiwi turf gives me a sense of quiet satisfaction (edit: well, I completely jinxed that one didn't I?)

Day 15 - Mount Hobson's benches

One of several volcanic bumps that punctuate Auckland's suburban skyline, Mount Hobson offers fantastic 360 views of the city and out to the ocean from the benches at its summit.

Day 14 - Growing your own veg

As well as those wonderful fruit 'n' veg shops I was banging on about, people over here are far more inclined to grow their own produce. One step at a time - I'll stick to herbs, lettuce and chillis for the time being and work my way up to the potatoes...

Day 13 - Being woken by sunshine

I could probably count on one hand the number of times over the past six weeks that I haven't been woken by the sun streaming blissfully in through the bedroom window. Please don't let it end!

Tuesday, 12 February 2013

Day 12 - The view from my bedroom window

At night, I look out of my bedroom window and see what looks like a model village of distant lights and tiny homes. In fact, it's the sea-fronting suburbs of Mission Bay and St. Helliers viewed from the hilly heights of Remuera.

Monday, 11 February 2013

Day 11 - Safe streets at night

There are many places in the world where you wouldn't dare leave the house to go running at night for fear of losing your life. But where I live in NZ the streets feel clean and safe and are perfect for a jog under moonlight.

Sunday, 10 February 2013

Day 10 - Fruit 'n' veg shops

In England, everyone gets all their food from the supermarket because it's cheaper and easier - your traditional 'green grocer' is, sadly, a dying breed. In NZ though, dedicated fruit and veg shops appear to be in ruder health, and the quality of the produce makes them hard to ignore.

Saturday, 9 February 2013

Day 9 - When the Auckland skyline opens up

From whatever angle, the Auckland skyline, dominated by its Sky Tower, is a sight to behold but for me it's at its most spectacular when appearing unexpectedly between buildings, like this view at the intersection of Ponsonby Road and Anglesea Street.

Day 8 - The Victoria Park Market chimney

The recently renovated Victoria Park Market has become a favourite spot for Friday night drinks and the vast old chimney provides some much-needed shade during this endlessly hot summer.

Thursday, 7 February 2013

Day 7 - Summer evenings

There's nothing quite like the feeling you get when you step out of the office into the sunshine on a warm summer evening.

Wednesday, 6 February 2013

Day 6 - Jeff the Cat

By a strange coincidence, a stray grey and white cat turned up on our doorstep on the very day I first arrived in New Zealand. I named him Jeff in protest at silly cat names.

Tuesday, 5 February 2013

Day 5 - Mid-week public holidays

It's Waitangi Day, which means a day off work in the middle of the week. Which means a rare chance to enjoy a leisurely breakfast outside in the garden. Bliss.

Day 4 - All year round fairy lights

The suburb of Remuera thinks it's Christmas 365 days a year...

Monday, 4 February 2013

Day 3 - The NZ Herald

Ok, it's not the Guardian but still, NZ's best newspaper is my number one source of local news and has great supplements that I like to devour over coffee on a Saturday morning.

Saturday, 2 February 2013

Day 2 - Mad plants

I grew up in England surrounded by innocuous daisies and daffodils. Here, the plants are strange and wild. Look, this one even ate my chair.

Day 1 - My garden

People have more green space over here. What I'd have done for one of these in London...
